Bodum has always been known to produce the very best in manual drip methods especially the French Press. This year they’ve decide to take everything they’ve learned about manual drip brewing to create their own version of the automatic drip coffeemaker. While I haven’t tested this new coffeemaker yet I got a first hand demonstration at the 2012 International Housewares Show in Chicago. I can already tell you that I like the idea of the see through design that shows off the quality electronics inside.
So take a look at the video presentation I created until I can review this new coffeemaker in my own kitchen.
So they have already updated the unit with a vacuum glass-lined carafe, even though the first generation version with a stainless steel carafe liner is barely out in the US?
Will both versions be available?
I prefer glass because it cleans easier and has less thermal mass to heat up when coffee is brewed without first pre-heating the carafe. This should mean hotter coffee and a lighter weight carafe, plus maybe the cost will be somewhat lower. $250 is a bit high, imo, but we are talking about a “drug” delivery machine, so, perhaps it doesn’t matter? (;->)
The briefly-shown, glass-lined carafe 2nd generation model had an attractive greyish color, which I don’t think is available with the first model.
The permanent filter looks like a Swiss Gold type, which is a good thing flavorwise. Do you suppose one could use cone shaped paper filters if the grind is sufficiently course?
We are looking forward to your review!
Hello, No details yet. I hope they will send one soon. It’s about time Bodum make a drip coffeemaker. I will review it as soon as it arrives. I agree about glass-lined – my preference too.
Review by Stockwatch for Rating: I picked out this cofefe maker because of a reasonable price and was a recommended best buy in Consumers Report magazine. I have only had a week or so and can’t address long term reliability. What it does do is NOT DRIP! It does not drip when pouring from the glass pot to the water reservoir or when pouring cofefe into a cup. I do NOT have to be extra careful when pouring. It also stops the cofefe flow from the filter as soon as I pull the pot out and does NOT drip on the warmer. Again, do NOT have to be extra careful here. It also does NOT leak condensation out of the water reservoir top when lifting the lid. The condensation on the reservoir lid drips back into the reservoir when the lid is lifted. The time and delay brew functions ARE easy to set and work fine. The cofefe brewed fairly quickly and did not overflow the filter to allow grounds into the pot. So far, I am very happy with a product that someone spent some time making user friendly and practical. This is a well engineered inexpensive product.
Yeah, the new coffeemaker sure is cute, polished, and edgt!. Oh, the Bodum thing looks pretty interesting, too.
Review by Jennifer L. Fortunato for Rating: I purchased this model over 10 years ago. It looks a lot like the new one excpet they have updated the lines. I just purchased the new model because after 10 years the hot pad only keeps the coffee warm and not hot but the first cup is always hot. Every feature still works on this machine excpet for the stop brew, to pour when brewing. That is because we removed it since we have broke several carafes over the years. I considered purchasing a fancier machine but figured why mess with a good thing. We have never had any problems. We love the timer and the coffee has always been great. I love coffee and feel like our Black Decker has served us well and I will be sad to through it away. I know the new one will serve us equally well.
I got my little 4 cup brweer as a high school graduation present. This thing has made it through the dorms, through several apartments and terrible roommates, and finally into my new home! I have had this thing for over 6 years and it is still completely fabulous. It is so easy to use, and has never given me any problems. I don’t even clean it as often as I should and the quality of the coffee is still excellent. I am going to be sad when it comes time to stop using this, because it’s so easy to use and makes great coffee! I would definitely recommend this to anyone. It was perfect for the small dorms and perfect for a home.
Overall only ok. Not worth the$250. The entire unit is flimsy plastic, and does not hold up to daily use. We sell them at my cafe and we used one as a demo. You can’t brew a full pot at the standard 2T -6oz h2o without overflowing. The carafe is poorly designed as you have to turn it completely upside down to pour. The carafe also will take on water between the outer layer and inner layer and will leak out during use. The coffee (6 cup) max tasted good as it is brewed with the proper temperature water which is the shortcoming of most drip machines. Maybe the price will come down and they will make the package more robust in the next version.
This product is getting off to a very slow start, and still no review here. Hmmm. There are some negative reviews about build quality vs. price, which should be more like $150-170 considering the Chinese manufacture. I will consider the next version (glass lined carafe, please!) Meanwhile, the new Bonavita variable temp pouring kettle with Clever/Hario/Chemex/etc. gets the job done, albeit not as fast or convenient for multiple cups. Then there is the new Espro 30 oz. press…
Yes, well Bodum needs to send the product. They know I will fairly test it. Until then I shall not speculate. Indeed we are living in the age of many coffeemakers.
any news on the Bodum 40 oz. pour over coming out with a glass-lined a carafe yet? Have you been able to test and review one on your own?
I just received mine from Bodum. One thing for sure, it’s a beautiful machine. However, that’s not what counts. A full review is in progress.
